In Fortify, I will share some of what strengthens our collective existence when we lean into history and art to practice our journalism, cement our public memory, commit to pro-democracy actions and resist powers that seek to crush the soul of society and culture. To be clear, diversity in every form is what keeps us afloat, alive and rooted in the reality of our world.
Much of what I offer for free will help add historical context to current events, issues facing the journalism industry and solutions that help strengthen our storytelling and accountability work. I’ll share my own reporting (writing, television and podcast work), public speaking highlights and reading/listening recommendations.
Paid subscribers will travel with me around the world and pull the curtain back on those adventures largely focused on the African diaspora. This will include reporting, teaching, book writing, research, and cultural experiences tied to myself and other travelers, journalists, authors and scholars.
A portion of those subscriptions will support Black journalists and storytellers. I’ll begin with donations to an organization for which I’ve trained and mentored journalists across the country-the Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting. Each December, I’ll update you on that donation amount and the next organization that we’ll support.
What I share is part of what fortifies me for the work before us-the pro-democracy, pro-truth, fact-based, historically-informed and globally-minded storytelling and research that’s germane to resisting erasure.
Collective strength is necessary to survive.
